What Do AI Engines Check Before Naming an Accounting Firm?
AI engines check 2 things in order. First, authority decides whether an engine considers the firm’s website at all. Then the engine picks the page and passage that best answers the question. Ahrefs found ChatGPT draws on Google’s ranking websites far more than on Google’s ranking pages.
| Step | What decides it | What an accounting firm controls |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Getting into the pool | Reputation signals, such as rankings, press and lists | Reputation work that builds over years |
| 2. Choice of page and passage | The passage that best answers the question | The credential line beside each piece of advice |
Ahrefs tested 3,311 short search terms and found ChatGPT cites Google’s ranking domains about 3 times as often as its ranking pages. Of the websites ChatGPT cited, 31.8% ranked in Google’s top 10. Of the exact pages it cited, only 10% did.
So picking the page is a second, separate choice. That second choice is where credentials do their work.
A page can name the firm clearly and still go unnamed in the answer built on it, because the engine judges the passage it lifts rather than the page as a whole. If the quoted passage does not carry the firm, the answer does not either.
Credentials follow the same rule. The credential that fits the question has to sit in the passage that answers it.

Which Credential Matches Which Accounting Service Line?
Each accounting service line has its own credential and its own public record. The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) keeps the registers for company auditors and self-managed super fund (SMSF) auditors. The Tax Practitioners Board (TPB) keeps the register for tax agents. A page answering an SMSF audit question needs the SMSF auditor credential.
Where Each Credential Is Recorded
| Service line | Credential to name on the page | Where the public record sits |
|---|---|---|
| Tax returns and tax advice | Registered tax agent | TPB register |
| Specialist tax advice | Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) | The Tax Institute |
| Company audit | Registered company auditor | ASIC professional registers |
| SMSF audit | Approved SMSF auditor | ASIC professional registers |
| Financial advice (wealth arm) | Financial adviser listed on the register | Moneysmart’s financial advisers register |
ASIC’s professional registers search lists company auditors and SMSF auditors. For each person, it shows these details for free:
- Name and registration number
- Start date of the registration
- Current status, including any suspension
ASIC processes changes to those registers once a day, so a lapsed registration shows up fast.
Why the CTA Carries Extra Weight on Tax Pages
The CTA shows depth of tax knowledge. The other credentials in the table show permission to do the work. The Tax Institute grants it only after its final CTA3 Advisory subject, which takes at least 36 months of relevant Australian tax or tax law experience to enrol in.
On a Division 7A or capital gains page, that is a sharper signal than registration alone.
3 Mismatches to Check
- Wrong register for the service. A tax agent registration shown on an SMSF audit page answers a different question.
- Lapsed registration still on the page. ASIC shows whether each registration is current, so a lapsed one makes a claim the record no longer backs.
- Old regulator on an advice page. Tax (financial) advisers moved from the TPB to ASIC. An older wealth page may still name the wrong body.
Each service line is also its own contest in AI search, with its own mix of sources that win. The credential map tells you what each page needs once you know which contest it is in.

Why Doesn’t a CA or CPA Designation Win the Answer Alone?
A CA or CPA designation covers every service a firm offers. Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ) groups tax, audit, valuation and financial advice under one label. A badge that covers every service cannot tell an engine which question a partner is qualified to answer.
Under CA ANZ’s Certificate of Public Practice rules, a member who offers accounting services to the public must hold one.
CPA Australia works the same way. Any member providing public accounting services into Australia or New Zealand must hold a public practice certificate, under the body’s By-Law 9.1.
| Certificate | What it proves | What it leaves out |
|---|---|---|
| CA ANZ Certificate of Public Practice | The member may offer accounting services to the public | Which services, such as SMSF audit or trusts |
| CPA Australia public practice certificate | The member may offer public accounting services | Which services the member actually performs |
Research on how language models weigh evidence points the same way. A peer-reviewed study at the 2024 Association for Computational Linguistics conference found models judge a page mostly by its relevance to the question asked. They largely ignored cues people trust, such as whether a text carries scientific references.
A badge with no link to the question is that kind of cue. Keep the designation, and add the service credential from the table above beside the advice it supports.

Can a Mid-Tier Firm Out-Credential a Larger Firm?
A mid-tier firm can match a larger firm on credentials, because a register entry says nothing about firm size. Tax agent registration is the common baseline across the profession rather than a point of difference, so it sets the floor. The edge comes from naming the right credential on the right page.
Domain strength does not settle the contest either. Semrush and Growth Memo studied 1,094 topics in ChatGPT and found the topic owner had a higher Authority Score in 52.5% of pairs. That is barely better than a coin toss.
| Step | Larger firm | Mid-tier firm |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Entry to the candidate pool | Rankings, press and award lists give it an edge | Cannot skip this step by effort alone |
| 2. Choice of passage | Still needs the matched credential on its page | Competes on equal terms when its page names the right credential |
Our guide to the rankings and lists that name firms covers the first step.
Inside the pool, the contest changes. A service question, such as “who audits SMSFs in Geelong”, is answered from the best-matched passage. An SMSF page that names its approved auditor competes with a national firm’s page that offers only a logo.
How Do You Tell if Credentials Are Getting Your Firm Named?
You test each service line on each engine and record 2 results: whether the engine named your firm and whether it linked to your page. Intelligent Resourcing measures named and linked as 2 different outcomes, on each engine. A firm can be linked without being named, and the fix differs for each.
BuzzStream’s study of 12,000 AI responses tracked how often brand mentions carried citations to the brand’s own site. The share shifted by prompt and industry:
- All prompts: 23.1% of brand mentions came with a citation.
- List and category prompts: the figure fell to 7.2%.
- Finance brands: the figure rose to 28.8%.
Run the test in this order:
- Pick 3 service questions buyers ask, such as SMSF audit, company audit and Division 7A.
- Ask each one on 3 engines, such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews.
- Record named and linked as separate columns for each answer.
- Read the gap using the table below.
| Result | What it means | What to fix |
|---|---|---|
| Linked, not named | The quoted passage lacks your firm and credential | Add the credential line to that passage |
| Named, not linked | Your page is not the one being lifted | Match the page to the service question |
| Neither | Your page has not entered the candidate pool | Work on authority first |
Check the quoted text, not just the link. A peer-reviewed audit of 4 generative search engines found only 74.5% of citations supported the sentence they sat beside. A link to your page does not prove the engine used your credential.

Which Credential Page Should an Accounting Firm Fix First?
Fix the service page where your firm holds a credential your rivals do not show. Check the SMSF audit and company audit pages first. ASIC records both credentials. It also posts its list of company auditors as free data every week.
Work through it in 4 steps:
- Check the record. Find your partners in ASIC’s weekly open dataset on data.gov.au. It lists each auditor’s number, name and status.
- Rewrite the line. Update the credential line on that page. Follow our method for matching credential lines to registers.
- Test again. Run the named and linked test on the same 3 engines.
- Move on. Repeat for the next service line, one page at a time.
A firm with 4 service lines has 4 separate contests, and each one is won on its own page.
Credential lines are one input into how AI decides who to recommend. Entity work and tracking across engines are the others.

FAQs
Does a CA or CPA designation help an accounting firm get named in AI answers?
It confirms the firm is a real accounting practice, but on its own it does not tie the firm to a service. Both cover every type of accounting work. An engine answering an SMSF or audit question looks for a credential tied to that service.
Which credential belongs on an SMSF audit page?
Name the approved SMSF auditor who signs off the audits, with their ASIC registration. Place it in the section that answers the audit question. Add the year of registration and the scope of their work.
Does a Chartered Tax Adviser credential help on tax advice pages?
It helps most on specialist pages, such as Division 7A or capital gains advice. The Tax Institute grants the CTA only after advanced study and 36 months of tax experience. Name the adviser and the credential in the section that gives the advice.
Should every partner’s credentials appear on every service page?
No. Show the credential of the person who wrote or reviewed that page’s advice. A tax page names the tax agent or Chartered Tax Adviser, and an audit page names the registered auditor.
What is the difference between being named and being linked in an AI answer?
Named means the engine says your firm’s name in the answer text. Linked means it cites your page as a source. Named and linked results often come apart, so track them as separate results for each service line.
