How Do Clients Find a Law Firm in 2026?

Clients find law firms through Google results, the local map and AI answers. A firm can rank first on Google and still be missing when someone asks ChatGPT for a lawyer in their city.
Good SEO, clear answers and consistent firm details all help with AI visibility.
| Search surface | What clients see | What shapes visibility |
|---|---|---|
| Google results | Firm websites and directories | Useful content, site quality, links and technical SEO |
| Map pack | Nearby law firms | How well the profile matches, how close it is and how well known the firm is |
| AI answers | Written answers that may name firms | What the tool can find, trusted sources and consistent firm details |
Google's own guidance says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity. The section covering that third factor is headed Prominence. Google defines it as how well known a business is, based on things like how many websites link to it and how many reviews it has.
SEO lifts search rankings, but rankings alone do not show whether AI tools name a firm. Generative engine optimisation (GEO) adds work on content and proof, and tracks AI answers on their own.
What Does Law Firm SEO Cover, and What Does It Cost?

Law firm SEO covers practice-area pages, local search, Google Business Profile, technical fixes and building a reputation online. The price depends on how many offices you have, how busy your market is and the state of your website.
Searcht, a Brisbane agency, publishes three price levels:
| Price level | Range | Local SEO scope | AI monitoring included |
|---|---|---|---|
| Foundation | $2,500 to $4,000 | Single location plus Google Business Profile | 1 AI surface |
| Scaling | $4,000 to $7,500 | 2 to 10 locations, plus geo reporting | 3 AI surfaces, named as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews |
| Authority | $7,500 to $10,000 | 11 or more locations, geo reporting across them | 4 AI surfaces, plus brand sentiment |
The page is titled as a retainer cost, so these read as monthly figures. The matrix itself states no currency and says nothing about goods and services tax (GST). These are general packages across industries rather than law firm rates, so confirm the final quote.
Three things change the cost:
- Offices: firms with several offices may need a page and a Google Business Profile for each eligible office.
- Practice areas: family law, employment law and conveyancing each need their own pages for different client questions.
- Competition: busy practice areas may need more content, more technical work and more links.
Searcht's packages include monitoring of AI answers, but tracking mentions is only one part of GEO. A firm can rank well in Google and still be left out of AI answers.
The cause may be mixed-up firm details, few outside mentions or pages that do not answer clients' real questions. Our guide on why law firms go missing explains these gaps.
What Should a Law Firm Expect GEO Work to Fix?
GEO work fixes what AI tools cannot confirm about a firm and its lawyers. AI providers do not publish their full rules or promise to name anyone, so the work makes the firm's details clear and the same everywhere.
Clio's GEO guide for law firms names four things that matter: a well-structured website, authoritative practice-area content, consistent directory listings and strong reviews.
Read that list carefully, because Clio presents it as the shared foundation rather than as AI-specific levers. All four matter for traditional search too, and Clio's point is that GEO then goes further in a few specific areas.
For what an engine checks about each lawyer, such as credentials, the state the advice covers and outside records, see how AI engines judge legal expertise.
When you buy GEO work, ask the agency which of these it will fix first, and which ones your SEO agency will keep doing. More content will not fix wrong firm details on other sites, so the plan should say which problem each task solves.
What Advertising Rules Should a Law Firm's Agency Follow?

Any agency writing for a law firm has to work inside the conduct rules. New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia all apply the Legal Profession Uniform Law. Under it, Rule 36 of the Australian Solicitors' Conduct Rules splits into two parts.
- Rule 36.1 requires that advertising is not false, misleading or deceptive, not likely to mislead or deceive, not offensive, and not prohibited by law.
- Rule 36.2 bars conveying a false or misleading impression of specialist expertise. It also restricts "accredited specialist" and its derivatives to solicitors accredited by the relevant professional association.
Firms in other states and territories work under their own version of the rules, so check which applies. Note also that the rule binds the solicitor and the principal of the practice, not the agency, so the risk lands on the firm.
For a buyer, the real question is how the agency keeps its copy inside those rules:
- A named approver. A solicitor at the firm signs off credentials, results and legal statements before anything goes live.
- AI drafts reviewed. Copy written with AI tools gets the same review as other copy.
- Result claims checked. Case results and testimonials are accurate, allowed and in context.
Ask for this approval process in writing before work starts.
How Should a Law Firm Budget for SEO and GEO?

Most Australian law practices are small, so most cannot fund every channel at once. The 2024 National Profile of Solicitors counted 16,793 private law practices in October 2024, excluding the Australian Capital Territory, where firm data was not available.
Of those, 78% were sole practices and another 13% had two to four principals. The report counts a one-principal practice as a sole practice, so that 78% includes firms with employed solicitors, not only solo operators.
For a small firm, the order of spending matters more than the total:
- Fix the local basics first. A complete Google Business Profile, one page per practice area and a fast site cost less than either retainer. They help in both Google and AI answers.
- Pay for SEO when Google drives the enquiries. Searcht's general levels start at $2,500 for a single location and rise with each extra office.
- Test AI answers before paying for GEO. Run the same client questions in ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews on a few dates, and note which firms each answer names. Only add GEO when rivals keep appearing and your firm does not.
- Add GEO as a separate line. Intelligent Resourcing's audit is AUD 2,500 plus GST, and its retainers start at AUD 3,200 a month plus GST.
A firm with several offices and busy practice areas may run both from the start. A one-principal practice usually gets more from a strong local listing than from either retainer in year one.
Whatever the order, set one budget review date. Every 3 months, compare cost against enquiries from Google and against the number of AI answers that name the firm. Move money towards the channel that brings in matters, not the one with the best report.
Which Agencies Fit Which Kind of Law Firm?
The right agency depends on whether a firm needs local SEO, an all-in-one marketing agency or AI visibility work.
The three providers below are grouped by fit, not ranked. We kept agencies whose own site shows law firm SEO or AI search work, and left out agencies already profiled on another Intelligent Resourcing post. We checked their pages on 5 October 2026 and again on 9 October 2026, and we treat results that agencies report about themselves as unverified.
| Agency | Best fit | Published pricing | Legal-sector evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Searcht | Multi-office SEO with AI-aware search | Three general levels from $2,500 | Dedicated law firm page, no named case study found |
| seoforlawfirms.com.au | Local SEO for law firms | Not published | Law-firm-only positioning and testimonials |
| Intelligent Resourcing | GEO alongside an existing SEO agency | AUD 2,500 + GST audit; retainers from AUD 3,200/month + GST | Published method, no named law firm case study found |
Firms That Win Work Locally
Searcht offers SEO for practice areas and for firms with many offices, plus technical fixes and digital public relations (PR). Its law firm SEO page also covers AI Overviews and conversational search tools.
The page names family, property, personal injury and business law among the areas it works in. It says Searcht was a finalist in the APAC 2024 Search Awards, and that Semrush and Clutch rank it among Brisbane's top SEO companies.
Best fit: multi-office firms that want SEO and AI-aware search from one agency.
Watch for: its published pricing covers many industries rather than law specifically, and we found no named legal case study on its law firm page.
Evidence to request: law firm references, results for each practice area and a separate report on AI answers.
Firms That Want a Law-Only Specialist
seoforlawfirms.com.au describes its strategies as tailored exclusively for law firms across Australia, and its own copy says it focuses only on law firms. It covers local and national SEO, technical work and Google Business Profile management, and its site features Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and Canberra.
Its enquiry form also lists Google Ads management and social media management. It offers a free audit it values at $3,000, and its homepage frequently asked questions (FAQ) section says most clients begin seeing noticeable improvements in 3 to 6 months. That is the agency's own estimate, not a promise.
Best fit: firms that want to rank higher in Google Maps and local results.
Watch for: it publishes no pricing. On its homepage, checked on 9 October 2026, we found no mention of ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews or AI citation tracking. Several client logos on that homepage are from other trades, including a denture clinic, a vehicle business and a finance brand.
Evidence to request: a law firm reference you can check, enquiry results, and how the law-firm-only positioning sits alongside those other client logos.
Firms Running Paid Search
Firms spending on Google Ads may want one agency to run paid ads, SEO and landing pages. That keeps budget and reporting in one place, but AI visibility can end up as a small add-on.
When you compare these agencies, ask for three things. Separate reports for organic, paid and AI visibility. A legal compliance step for ad copy and landing pages, with a named reviewer. And a law firm example showing results for a law firm, not another industry.
Where Does an AI Visibility Specialist Fit for a Law Firm?
An AI visibility specialist works alongside an SEO agency, not in place of one. Google states there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimisations necessary. It adds that SEO best practices remain relevant for those features.
GEO adds checks on whether AI answers name or cite the firm correctly, across several engines.
Intelligent Resourcing is a Melbourne agency that does GEO and answer engine optimisation (AEO). It does not replace local SEO, Google Maps work or paid ads.
It finds where rivals get cited and the firm does not, then builds clear answer pages, fixes firm details and tracks results in each AI engine. Its published pricing starts with a Strategic Blueprint at AUD 2,500 plus GST, a one-off citation audit and plan. Cited-Core then runs from AUD 3,200 a month plus GST for ongoing work and AI tracking.
Best fit: firms that already have an SEO agency and a proven AI citation gap.
Watch for: Intelligent Resourcing cannot promise that AI will name a firm. We found no named law firm case study on its pricing and service pages.
Evidence to request: a sample audit, results by prompt, the AI engines it tracks and who does what alongside the SEO agency. Our GEO checklist for law firm websites covers what to fix first.
How Should a Law Firm Compare Agency Proposals?
Compare proposals with five questions:
- Who does AI name for our practice area today? Ask for repeat prompt tests, a list of rivals and the sources AI cites.
- What does the fee include? Confirm deliverables, currency, GST, contract length and what is left out.
- How are results measured? SEO reports should show rankings and good enquiries. GEO reports should track mentions, citations and share of voice for set questions.
- Who reviews legal claims? Ask for a named approval process for credentials, legal statements and advertising rules.
- Which law firm can vouch for your work? Ask for a reference or written proof, and find out where legal experience is thin.
A suburban firm with weak local rankings should usually start with SEO. A firm with strong rankings but steady AI gaps has a better case for adding GEO.
Being named is not the same as getting the call. Pew Research Center analysed 68,879 Google searches by about 900 United States adults in March 2025. It found users clicked a result 8% of the time when an AI summary appeared, against 15% when one did not.
That is United States data and an association rather than proof of cause. It still makes the point: choose the agency that can show the gap, explain the fix and track enquiries as well as mentions.

FAQs
Which agency in this guide works only with law firms?
seoforlawfirms.com.au says it focuses only on law firms, though several client logos on its homepage are from other trades. Searcht serves several industries, law among them, and publishes a dedicated law firm page. Intelligent Resourcing works across several fields and does GEO and AEO work only.
How much does SEO cost for a law firm in Australia?
It depends on offices, competition and scope. Searcht publishes general packages from $2,500 to $10,000, with no currency or GST treatment stated on the price matrix. These are one vendor's prices across industries, not an Australian law firm average, so treat them as a starting point rather than a benchmark.
Is law firm SEO cheaper than adding GEO?
Not always. Searcht's general levels start at $2,500, and Intelligent Resourcing's GEO retainers start at AUD 3,200 a month plus GST after a AUD 2,500 plus GST audit. Compare the total cost over the months you expect to run each service, and check whether your SEO package already tracks AI answers.
What should a law firm ask an agency about legal copy approval?
Ask who signs off each page, and whether a solicitor at the firm approves credentials and result claims. Ask whether copy drafted with AI tools gets the same review. Get the process in writing before work starts, because Rule 36 binds the solicitor and the principal rather than the agency.
Which agencies in this guide track AI answers?
Searcht's packages monitor a brand across 1, 3 or 4 AI surfaces depending on the price level. Intelligent Resourcing tracks citations in each AI engine as its core service. On 9 October 2026, we found no AI citation tracking mentioned on seoforlawfirms.com.au's homepage.
